Acorns Children’s Hospice
Charity number 700859.

A parent never imagines their child will be diagnosed with a life limiting or life-threatening condition. But when the unimaginable happens, Acorns steps in, helping families cope at every stage of their child’s life and beyond, wherever and whenever they need it.

Acorns for the Three Counties, based in Worcester, provides lifeline care, love and laughter to over 225 local children and their families every year. The hospice provides a home-like environment where children take part in a range of fun and therapeutic activities, from arts and crafts sessions to hydrotherapy. Children visit Acorns for rehabilitative respite, symptom management, emergency and end-of-life care. Our dedicated teams provide not only specialist clinical care for children and young people but a range of psychosocial services for the whole family, including bereavement support, advocacy and a number of dedicated support groups for mums, dads, grandparents, brothers and sisters. Two-thirds of the money we need to provide our children’s hospice care comes from fundraising, donations and the income generated through our charity shops.

The IPU provides specialist palliative care that seeks to promote and maintain the best possible quality of life, considering the needs and wishes of the patient and their family.

The Living Well Services Team provides holistic care to patients at the hospice. Different levels of support are provided through a rolling calendar of wellbeing sessions, exercise programmes, and one-off workshops. There is also a weekly Wellbeing Café on Wednesdays. The team’s focus is on rehabilitative palliative care, which sees them support and empower patients to live as well as possible with their condition.  The Hospice at Home Team of clinical nurse specialists, senior staff nurses, and senior healthcare assistants, provide palliative care in the patient’s own home or at the hospice, advice on symptom management, care in the last days of life and support to empower patients to remain at home at the end of their life.

Alongside nursing and medical care, there’s also a range of support services for patients and the people that are important to them, which may include their biological or chosen family and carers. The Family Support Team offers a choice between face-to-face or remote support over the telephone and via video calls. Support includes counselling, social work, Citizens Advice, group support, and bereavement support.

St Richard’s is an independent charity and relies on voluntary support, including from donations, gifts in Wills, retail, and events for most of its income, with the remainder funded by the NHS. Each year the hospice team supports in the region of 3,100 individuals in Worcestershire.
